International Playboy Part 1 - planes, trains and automobiles

(with monorails and buses thrown in for good measure throughout the trip)

A late taxi to the airport followed by a very late (10.30pm) flight made for a tired lad at the start of the trip.  Thankfully, we were all rewarded with seats up the pointy end of the aircraft, as well as the bassinette that Miles only just managed to squeeze into.  Two thirds of the family slept well, with mum struggling to get comfortable in a flat bed that isn't truly flat (mum = spoiled).  We'd worried beforehand about whether Miles would choose to evacuate his own bomb bay whilst on the aircraft, but thankfully the payload remained aboard.

The train from Narita to Tokyo was slow and full of extraordinarily quiet commuters.  Miles was fascinated by the foreign scenery whizzing by, locals were fascinated by the foreign family braving a packed commuter train, and dad came close to developing scoliosis over the hour Miles chose to fall asleep awkwardly in his arms, dreaming no doubt of Hello Kitty.

Tokyo Station would have been chaos anywhere else, but Japanese love a good queue more than anyone else and we were amazed to see hundreds of commuters forming double queues (left = standing, right = walking) at the escalators.  We managed to disrupt the system with our entourage of baggage spanning both lines on the escalators...whoops.

A taxi from the station to the hotel, and we'd come full circle in what had been 14 hours of transportation fascination for the little fella.  A monorail to Haneda Airport and bus from Sapporo to Niseko the following day still await...

looking more refreshed than we were really feeling...waiting for the train at Narita Airport
